BIO
New Zealand artist based in London, renowned for his works infused with satire and subversion, continues his mission of challenging social norms and the limits imposed by the art world. With a career marked by significant exhibitions, including a well-received presence at the Saatchi Gallery in London, PRIEST reaffirms his status as a pioneer of the contemporary art scene. His vibrant fusion of nostalgic references to cartoons and criticism of capitalism now confronts the phenomenon of commodifying the instinctive act of graffiti, through an exhibition that prompts reflection.
PRIEST and CHAMPAGNE EDOUARD MARTIN - VENICE 2024
“"The Capitalization of Graffiti" investigates the evolution of street art, from its origins in urban subcultures to its current incarnation as a marketable object in the art world. By presenting works true to the original aesthetic of the streets, the exhibition invites visitors to contemplate the transformation and subsequent commercialization of graffiti. The use of labels with exorbitant and ironic prices, along with velvet ropes demarcating the exhibition spaces, underscores with a bitter irony the paradox of selling what was once only an act of rebellion.
In an unprecedented blend of the unstoppable energy of street art and the refined universe of luxury champagne, contemporary artist PRIEST presents his new project, “The Capitalization of Graffiti,” within the prestigious setting of Hotel Ca' di Dio, targeting the luxury segment of the Italian and international market. This special initiative, which is part of the Venice Biennale context, marks a turning point in the intersection of art, culture, and commercial philosophy.
